🎯 Waiting until you feel ‘ready’? You may be there a while.
Some people stand at the starting line feeling genuinely ready. But for many of us, 'completely, 100% ready, nothing could possibly go wrong, is a feeling that arrives somewhere between 'never' and 'three coffees in'. And that's perfectly okay. 🌊
Many of the people I work with; career changers, returners after caring for children, school leavers, and those eyeing the next step up, arrive sounding a bit like the archer in the picture above. Bow in hand, target in sight, brain helpfully chiming in with “What if I miss?”, “Everyone’s better than me,” and the all-time classic, “I’ll start Monday.” (Narrator: they did not start Monday.) 😅
Here’s my gently controversial take: the first arrow is supposed to be a bit wobbly. That’s not failure, that’s data. In our sessions, we let it fly before it’s perfect: a rough draft application, a slightly awkward practice answer, one brave email you’ve been ‘meaning to send’ since approximately 2023. Then we see where it lands and adjust. 🏹
Good archers don’t just squint at the bullseye and hope, although in reality it may look like it. They check the wind, the light, the ground under their feet. We do the same with your career, looking at the whole picture around you: the people in your corner, your real-life circumstances, the opportunities (and the occasional curve-ball) in your world, and what actually matters to you. Because hitting someone else’s target perfectly is still a miss. 🧭
We also leave room for the happy accidents. Careers rarely go in a tidy straight line, the best opportunities often arrive disguised as a random chat, an odd course, or a door you didn’t even know was there. Stay curious and you’ll spot them. 📈
